Longstanding Services to Tourism Award – John Hughes (John from the What’s On in Swansea Magazine)

Sponsor

This award recognises the significant and long-term contribution of an individual to the local tourism industry.  Someone whose influence has impacted on not just their own area of expertise but also made a real difference to the quality of the tourism offer in the destination and the visitor experience.

Getting visitors to Swansea Bay in the first place is critical, but once they are here it’s vital that they are able to easily access the wide diversity of things to see and do, so that these visitors move around the destination in order to benefit as many local tourism businesses as possible. And also, not forgetting that the powerful resident market is always hungry for new ideas for places to go in their hard-earned leisure time.

Swansea born and bred, this individual has, for 35 years, played a key role in ensuring both visitors and residents are kept informed all year round. Starting out with one desk, one landline and one ambition to provide a dedicated service to the visitor, resident and tourism operator alike.

From the early days of cut and paste right through to the present day, surviving challenging economic times and a digital revolution – this person and their close knit, but equally committed team have never failed to deliver their product on time, each time.

Synonymous with the provision of up-to-date information, John knows everyone in the industry and is universally respected and well-liked.

During the judging process when this John’s name was raised, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive; words like ‘professional’ and ‘knowledgeable’ were often heard but so were ‘warm’, ‘friendly’ and ‘trustworthy’.

You won’t have to go far in Swansea, Mumbles and Gower (and beyond!) before you see John’s signature contribution to the industry in black and white – well, actually in full colour and in six editions a year!  In cafes, attractions, accommodation, shops and welcomed into most homes in Swansea Bay and the wider area, is where you’ll find this individual’s quality contribution to the success of the tourism industry in their hometown.

A small family business, John has always been fully supported by his wife and now by his daughter and who, from tonight’s awards, is clearly following in her father’s footsteps.

Our Longstanding Services to Tourism Award, as we celebrate our 50th year as a city, goes to who we all affectionately know as ‘What’s On John’ – congratulations to John Hughes!
